When it comes to clearing out your home, separating the junk from the good is the hardest part. Sometimes, it takes more than asking “Is it broken?” or another fundamental question. Other times, your junk speaks for itself. These 5 items are examples of junk that is, well, junk:

But once you read through the most interesting articles, are you going to read them again? Instead of dropping them in the recycling, donate old magazines to a nursing home, family shelter, or other another place in need. Of course, make an exception and keep any magazines that include features written by or about you or a loved one.

Only keep books that you’ll read again or special editions that you’ve collected. If you have books that you’ve mostly forgotten about, but are still in good condition, give them to a donation program so that someone else can enjoy them.

Once or twice a year, go through your cabinet and make sure that nothing has reached its expiration date. Remember to properly dispose of expired medication, as recommended by the FDA.

If you find canned goods that aren’t expired, but that you probably won’t eat, bring them to your local food bank. Another surprising pantry clutter culprit is your spice rack. Take a look at your spices, especially the ones you rarely use, and make sure they’re still good.
Towelshttp://comfyinternational.com/You know the gross smell that dish towels get? When throwing them in the wash doesn’t reduce the stink, it’s time to toss them out. Even regular bath towels only last for a few years. If they’re not too worn out, donate them to your local Humane Society.
